Bus stop love stories

Bus stop love story

Began September 19, 2011

My aim is to let you know of a kind of romantic love that is less known to westerners, a bit more virtual than what one might see now a day through the web, I shall suggest strongly.
First as it is common to say, to set the stage for the story, I need to tell you a bit or more than just a little, about the context. That is, when and where it happened, as well as the creatures to whom it happened.
Background
1- The story happened to me Eyni (sounding as Aimee) and Sia (e.g as Mia), two Iranian teenagers beginning from their senior high school years, but it could well have happened to many Iranian school boys of the same flock. I am aware that readers need to know more about my family background as well as one of my buddy Sia’s which I will return to indeed.

2- Speaking of the era I am talking about the second half of the 1960s era.
The exact timing does matter much, because it is just before the price hike of the early 1970 that resulted from the Arab Oil Embargo, the emergence of the OPEC which turned on an increasing flow of petro Dollars to Iran from which people inevitably were going to receive some if not the lion's share.

3- The late Shah of Iran as the monarch and absolute ruler of the country had well established his autocratic reign of power around the country, answering to no one (or may be only to the US government). He still had to wait a few more years to get his hand on the better part of the petro-dollars, nonetheless a small-to-moderate increase in the country's oil revenue was already in the making.
As it is obvious the petro dollars driven the opulence needed to wait for a 3-4 more years to reach to ordinary Iranians, but the wind of change had already began .

4-The relative increase in the oil price has allowed for some boost in the government spending , which in its turn had already began to create a modern middle class. Concurrently the pressure from president Kennedy had resulted in some reform the basic aim of which was also to help speed up the expansion of this emerging middle class in the country. Though as one would expect the reform program was called “the revolution of Shah and his people”.
5- I need to remind that with regards to boy girl relationships Iran of the time was a rather conservative society although there was hardly any restrictions on the part of government authorities.

A flashlight on the culture

Namoos
This is probably one of the most critical value-piece engraved in the heads of Iranian boys (of the time) almost as early as they can understand something, literally it may mean dignity integrity and any other positively value laden adjective for a man. Practically however namoos means a boy must watch and protect his sister and other female members of his extended family from a dirty look (let alone touch) of other men. Furthermore this type of male protection is mainly and basically focused on the physical body of females and in it there is absolutely no place for what or how the protected females may think about it.

Let me tell you this about nammos. at about the same era of our story, I remember once I heard a woman neighbor of a bit younger than my mom screaming and following after her son about 8-9 years old Abi. who was scared and escaping from her with a much faster pace. She would scream that “I am going to beat a hell out of this stupid boy, have his tongue caught or his mouth filled up with hot black pepper when he comes back for dinner” and continued “let him ever dare to comes back”.

Later on I heard the woman telling my mom about the reason why she was so opset. She said the stupid little boy has been lecturing her(his own mom) about the importance of a woman covering herself from other men and that otherwise his father and him (the boy) were going to be looked at as Namoos-less men destined to hell. She would say that her husband never dares to talk this way to me. She and my mom both agreed that it was most likely that a teacher must have started t brainwash the kids.
